Micro-chipping to identify your dog

Just as with small children, accidents can and do happen. For example, your puppy can escape from the backyard or break free from
the leash.

Prepare for emergency situations. While a collar and personalized tag is the quickest method for identification and recovery, the collar can fall off or the tag could become unreadable.

Identification tattoos on your puppy’s ear can be a good alternative, but even tattoos can wear off or be covered with fur – and it can be difficult to track the source of a tattoo. That’s why micro-chipping is the best way to permanently identify your dog.

Microchip
A microchip is a tiny computer chip, about the size of a grain of rice.

It can be implanted by your veterinarian, under your pet’s skin, between the shoulder blades. The microchip can be inserted without anesthesia.

A microchip is safe, non-toxic, and it stays in place throughout your dog’s life. Each microchip has a code that is different for each animal. When the microchip is scanned with a special scanning device, the code of the chip can be read.

If your pet gets lost, a veterinary hospital or animal shelter can quickly scan him and contact the micro-chipping company. Then, the company contacts you to re unite you with your puppy.

Unlike ear tattoos, most microchips have a central database that can be accessed across North America.
