healthy VITALITY

DR. AMY DICKE, a technical service veterinarian with the Iams Company, says, "Good dental health is a result of the three Ds: dentistry, consisting of routine checkups and cleanings, daily brushing and a diet with dental benefits."
PLAQUE ATTACK
Plaque is a soft film of bacteria, food particles and debris that clings to teeth. If plaque is allowed to remain on the tooth surface it will become hard and turn to tartar. Dry kibble helps to scrub off plaque. Various dental chews and treats can also help.
BRUSH UP
Brushing your dog's teeth should become a part of your daily routine. Owners can start with a piece of gauze dipped in bouillon and rub their dog's teeth. This way, the dog becomes used to having his teeth and gums touched. Then, move on to veterinary toothpaste and a soft pet toothbrush. Human toothpaste should not be used.
Dr. Dicke explains that "a dog with a healthy oral cavity will eat better, have better breath, enjoy better health and temperament, and be more acceptable in the home."
